What happened: ARTBA members met Aug. 8 with the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to share feedback on the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) final rule updating the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Why it matters: ARTBA has previously expressed concerns that FHWA’s proposal would stifle innovation in highway safety technology by not allowing the testing and use of patented products.

Boise-based Evolutionary Markings Inc. told OMB its small business stood to loose capital investments because FHWA had prevented state transportation departments from testing and using its products. Omaha-based Lindsay Corp. asked that FHWA consider and document work zone situations that place workers at heightened risk, and where the use of positive protection devices could increase their safety.

What’s next: FHWA will publish its final rule following of OMB’s review. Members interested in the rule should contact ARTBA’s Prianka Sharma.
