What happened: Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) Sept. 21 introduced a measure that would require electric vehicle (EV) purchasers to pay up to $1500 in a one-time fee at the point of sale. Sen. Fischer’s bill would require the resources generated be dedicated to the Highway Trust Fund (HTF).
Why it matters: The proposed legislation comes at a time of Capitol Hill debate over the impact EVs have on roads and bridges while not contributing to the HTF. The legislation would attempt to bring EVs in line with gasoline and diesel powered vehicles that contribute to the HTF via federal motor fuel taxes.
What’s next: ARTBA is urging all Senate members to become co-sponsors of the bill, which follows the 35 states already assessing an EV user pays fee for maintenance of state transportation systems.
