What happened: The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) detailed $53.2 billion in Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 highway formula funds available to the states. The total is 42 percent more than FY 2021 formula funds and includes new bridge and electric vehicle charging formula programs distributed earlier this year.
ARTBA’s action: The U.S. Department of Transportation announced over $20 billion for public transit in an April 6 press release. While FHWA Division administrators were notified April 1 of the highway funding, there was no equivalent announcement. ARTBA distributed the state allocation information to House and Senate offices to ensure it is not overlooked.
What’s next: State transportation departments have until Sept. 30 to obligate the highway funding. Bridge formula funds can be spent over five years.
