What’s happening: The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is proposing to amend its existing standards to better protect miners from exposure to respirable silica.

Why it matters: The proposed rule applies to all coal, metal, and non-metal mines. It sets permissible levels of silica exposure at 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air for all miners working a full shift. The current level is 100. The rule would also require new sampling requirements, medical surveillance, and recordkeeping. If finalized, new standards would take effect 120 days after publication.

What’s next: MSHA will host three public hearings to hear feedback from the public. Regulated industries have until Aug. 28 to file written comments. Members who wish to present, or have ARTBA present on their behalf, should contact Prianka Sharma or Brad Sant.
