What happened: The U.S. Department of Transportation Feb. 21 awarded 34 grants worth $435 million to 15 university transportation centers (UTCs).
Why it matters: The UTC program helps universities advance research and technology that improves the safety, mobility and environmental impact of transportation infrastructure.

- Carnegie Mellon University—Promoting safety
- Clemson University—Reducing risk of cyber attacks
- Prairie View A&M University—Enhancing and extending durability of transportation infrastructure
- University of California, Davis—Preserving the environment
- University of Texas Austin—Improving mobility of people and goods
