What happened: The White House issued a 465-page guidebook to help state and local governments and stakeholders understand the funding opportunities available through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). An accompanying data file allows users to sort by fields such as agency, amount, recipient, or program name. ARTBA has also produced a 36-page IIJA analysis.
Why it matters: The IIJA allocates resources to over 350 programs through more than a dozen federal departments and agencies. Understanding funding timetables and program details will help state and local governments and their private sector partners get to work on projects that improve safety and convenience for the traveling public.
What’s next: Congress must pass a Fiscal Year 2022 transportation spending bill to appropriate the first year of the highway and transit funding authorized under the IIJA. A Continuing Resolution now keeping the government operating at fiscal 2021 spending levels expires Feb. 18. The Biden administration said it will publish subsequent versions of the guidebook to update on the latest deadlines and details.
