A Hub for Economic Opportunity
Challenge: New Carrollton, Maryland, northeast of the nation’s Capital boasts almost 12,000 public- and private-sector jobs, with another 4,000 jobs predicted as new office buildings, including Metro’s new Maryland headquarters, open in the years ahead. Rail, metro, bike lanes, and bus service all converge in New Carrollton. Turning those transportation options into economic opportunity has been a goal for the community.
Solution: With help from the federal infrastructure investment law, the New Carrollton Multi-Modal Transportation Station Project is approaching the station. More than just a building – the new structure will include retail and unite ongoing development, which includes offices and housing. New pedestrian and bike lanes will better connect people to transit options. For residents and workers in New Carrollton – a vibrant, urban community centered around interconnected transportation is on the way.
What they’re saying: “Literally what used to be just flat surface parking lots is now an explosion of growth,” said Angie Rodgers, the county’s deputy chief administrative officer for economic development. (Washington Post, 08/25/2023).
